The Big Three Business Credit Bureaus
Business credit works differently than personal credit. Instead of Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion, you're dealing with:
- Dun & Bradstreet (D&B): The oldest and most widely used. Uses Paydex score (0-100) and DUNS number.
- Experian Business: Separate from personal Experian. Uses Intelliscore Plus (0-100) and Business Credit Risk Score.
- Equifax Business: Tracks business payment history and risk. Uses Business Credit Risk Score (101-992).
How Business Credit Scores Work
Each bureau has its own scoring system:
D&B Paydex Score (0-100): Based purely on payment history. 80+ is considered excellent. 90-100 means you pay early. Most lenders want to see 75+.
Experian Intelliscore Plus (0-100): Predicts likelihood of delinquency over 12 months. 76-100 is low risk. Uses payment history, credit utilization, public records, and firmographic data.
Equifax Business Credit Risk Score (101-992): Higher is better. Evaluates payment history, credit utilization, company age, and industry risk.
What Lenders See When They Pull Your Business Credit
When you apply for credit, lenders pull one or more business credit reports. They see:
- Credit scores from each bureau
- Payment history with vendors and creditors
- Number of active tradelines and credit utilization
- Public records (liens, judgments, bankruptcies)
- Company details (address, phone, DUNS, industry)
Building Scores Across All Three Bureaus
Most vendors and creditors don't report to all three bureaus. You need to strategically select tradelines that report where you need them.
- D&B: Most Net 30 vendors report here first
- Experian: Store cards and fleet accounts often report here
- Equifax: Credit cards and larger accounts tend to report here
- Goal: 5-8+ tradelines reporting to each bureau
Monitoring Your Business Credit
Unlike personal credit (which you can monitor for free), business credit reports typically require paid subscriptions.
- D&B CreditSignal: Monitor your Paydex score and D&B report
- Nav: Pulls from all three bureaus, shows scores and recommendations
- Experian Business: Direct monitoring from Experian
- FundNow helps you track reporting and optimize for approvals
